"I'm trying to visulize that steel gear actually breaking but I can't get that into focus. What exactly happens to that gear?

If the starter is the proper one for the engine, I can only think that the bendix gear is not properly aligned with the flywheel teeth, that is the gear is either too far into the flywheel teeth or too far away from them.

If this is the case (disconnect the battery first), the cure would be to place a shim where needed to either decrease or increase that gap."

the teeth arent breaking off or any thing the gear has a housig at the base of the gear when it breaks the gear free spins from the base i was wondering if maybe there is a decompression for the engine thats not working or something that is making to much stress on the gear its self

"There's no compression release on that engine. You either have something missing or the wrong parts on that starter.

I'd suggest that you take the starter to a reliable dealership to match up the parts for that specific starter.

That engine has two different starters available to fit it, a "Prestolite" starter and a "Bosch" starter. Which do you have?"
