"Hi all,

I have on my boat a very reliable 1979 70Hp Evinrude outboard. Ever since I owned the motor it has always been a struggle to turn over. The starter pinion flings up and engages but really struggles to turn the motor over. At first I thought it was the starter solenoid/relay. So i changed it, no difference. So it must be the starter motor. I replaced it with a brand new starter. Now when I turn the key I can hear the solenoid click but the starter doesn't want to turn. But when I used a piece of wire and bypassed the solenoid the pinion flings up and cranks the motor verrrrry well. Any suggestions?"

"If in bypassing the solenoid,

"If in bypassing the solenoid, you mean that you are using a length of battery cable to jump from one large terminal of the solenoid to the other large solenoid terminal.... and this results in having the electric starter engage properly, the problem would be.......

Either there is a voltage drop in the wire leading from the "S" (solenoid) terminal of the ignition switch to the related small 3/8" hex nut terminal of the solenoid OR the ground wire from the other 3/8" hex nut solenoid terminal is not grounding properly.

Either of these conditions (or both) would result in the starter solenoid not pulling the inner plunger in properly to fully contact the internal contacts of the two large solenoid terminals. This condition prevents the full battery voltage from passing thru the solenoid to the starter.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:

Callum if you used a wire from

Callum if you used a wire from the battery to starter and it worked fine you have very high resistance in the cables\lugs etc.

However if you connected a wire from one side of the solenoid to the other (Large terminals) and it cranked ok bad solenoid or high resistance on the lugs connecting the solenoid
