1979 35hp johnson

I have a 1979 35 horsepower Johnson ran perfect and took to the lake one day and just all of a sudden it's like you turn the key off .i took it home and check the fireing and thought it had a bad coil so i got 2 new ones.i check the flywheel key I rebuilt the carburetor to fuel pump and I still cannot get this engine to run it will start and run at half throttle for a little bit then it backfires and then it's like it floods out the plugs and runs out of gas can any give me some ideals. This motor was running perfect this just happen all of a sudden one day
 
Check the compression first. Then the spark which should jump a 7/16" open air gap on a spark tester.

So I got my motor running I cleaned the carburetor and took it to the lake it ran good for about 30min I ran it up and down the lake.then all of a sudden it died just like you turn the key off and now has no fire at all with new plugs and coils any advice what might be rong .

Until you give us compression numbers and if it jumps a open air gap of 7/16 inch with a spark gap tester not much we can do.
 
Disconnect the kill wire to the powerpack the yellow black stripe wire and see if you get spark? Have you cleaned all the connectors good with electrical cleaner and put back together with dielectric grease.

The best way to diagnose the CD type system is with a DVA adaptor and a good multimeter with a diode setting. If everything check out or close the powerpack is likely the problem. Be real careful messing with a ignition switch with the battery connected all it takes is a split second to cook the powerpack shorting the kill wire to battery posative.
 
Ok I checked out my coil wires they were crossed. I got it running now it runs smooth for a few min then hecups try to die but keep running after several times it finally dies but starts back . Only does this while at ideal speed
