1979 260 drive and TA compat

I have an all stock 1979 Mercruiser 260 which needs a new gimbal ring. I was thinking of just replacing the entire transom assembly with a new Alpha 1, Gen 1 TA. Is the old 1979 pre-alpha drive compatible with a new TA? Will that old drive bolt right on to the new modern transom assembly? Any other thoughts or issues I should be concerned with?

Thanks

Ayuh,... The drive is no problem, but you'll need the narrower motor mounts of the newer flywheel cover for the motor,...

Thank you, did not know that. Could you expand on your answer. Do I need to chamge the bell housing on the rear of the block to one that has the narrower mounts?

I think my 1979 260 should hve a 12.75" flywheel.

thanks

Ayuh,.... The rear motor mounts on the Alpha are 'bout 9" apart, 'n 'bout 15" apart on the MC-1,....

You'll need an Alpha flywheel cover to do yer swap,...
Then, the y-pipe, may, or may not match up,....
