Recently purchased this motor and having some issues. Hopefully someone on here can help me start in the right direction. Pretty much a novice working on outboards. Engine starts only fully choked, and most times will only drive choked, but not always...thinking carb prob needs cleaned. Was wondering if the spray carb cleaner will work just to see if that helps without having to take it off? Didn't know if the cleaner would harm the engine or not. Also, wondering if turning the rich/lean would help? Also....when boat is on load...will jerk like I hit a submerged object. Just does this once when initially gets under load. Runs fines until I stop/or idle down and does it again when I take off under load...but again, just the once. I'm guessing a clutch/gear issue. Also, drained gear case yesterday and about 1/2cup of water ran out before grease did. The outer prop seal isn't leaking, so I'm guessing it's a seal somewhere else. There are 3 small holes in case above fill hole that grease or oil runs out sometimes along with water. I did re-seal the shift rod hole so not sure if that's where the water came from in the gear case or not. I'm guessing I'm gonna have to replace the clutch dog, but since I"ve never done it, was wondering if I need the "cradle carrier" as well? I've got to buy a repair manual but not sure which one is best. I can get a seloc reasonable but don't know if it will be detailed enough for me a novice to do the repairs. Also...it's got the additional 5" shaft added on it, making it a long shaft, would love to take it off and convert it back to a short shaft, but not sure what that would entail. Thanks in advance for the insight and help with my issues.

Thanks kimcrwb1....I'll do the seafoam deal. I don't have a barrel, so I"ll have to wait to take it to the lake to do that. I just changed spark plugs....top one was definitely wet and black sooty looking....bottom was wet but only about 1/2 as sooty as the top. I'm gonna do the lower unit deal just as soon as I can. Guess I"ll start with the seal kit and go from there.

Changed spark plugs and motor purrs like a kitten.....wow! Going to order lower unit seal kit and impeller kit and change them out.
