1979 25hp evinrude

I purchased a 79 25hp evinrude 25904 that had been sitting for at least 4+ yrs. I bought a carb rebuild kit and some carb cleaner....and replaced what parts I could get to ie... float and the "thing" that hangs from it....I sprayed cleaner everywhere I could reach. There are some parts left over that I'm guessing went under the "freeze out plug" looking things...but not being sure what I was doing, I didn't attempt to take them out. I'm not proficient enough to do that and the nearest mechanic that I know of is over 40 miles from me. So I did what I could and hope it worked.

I replaced the plugs. No noticeable fouling present on the old ones. I'm getting proper spark from both....1/2" on both. However, the bottom coil is somewhat questionable as the "waxy" looking stuff has run down it some. I checked compression and I'm getting 110 on top and 105 on bottom. I replaced fuel line on tank and on engine going to fuel pump and carb.

Here' my issue: engine starts decently well and will idle. Goes into gear and goes well until getting above 3/4 throttle....then engine starts cutting out and will die unless I pump the bulb on the tank line. Perhaps it's a fuel pump issue or that "waxy" coil??? Perhaps even dirty carb???

Any suggestions what I need to do?

When you have to pump the primer bulb it sounds like a fuel pump issue. Just for the heck of it, do a cylinder drop test on it to make sure it's running on both cylinders.

I'll replace the fuel pump. Run some seafoam thru the system and see if that wont do it. I don't have any clue what a cyclinder drop test consists of. Thanks Guys!!!

Agreed, it sounds like a fuel pump problem, but not necessarily so. ANY air leaks anywhere between the fuel pump and the level of the gas in the tank will cause the same fuel starvation problem. The fuel pump works well on fuel, but is a lousy air pump.

EDIT: Um, and another thing, how about restrictions in the flow to the pump? Dirty filter in the tank?? Dirty filter under the black cap on the fuel pump?
