1979 15 hp Johnson no spark

Hi, thanks for reading this. I'm a veteran mechanic and this one has me puzzled. While trolling with this long trusted motor it suddenly died....no spark. It has an alternator but no electric start......I use it to charge the electric trolling motor battery.

I put a spark module from a known good motor, same vintage.....maybe a '91. Still no spark. Upon returning the module to the '91, I found no spark on that motor now too.

Took both spark modules home (had been in remote Ontario) and tried on a good motor, and both modules now dead.
Could the trigger or stator on my 1979 motor have "killed" these modules? If so, how can I test for that?

Thanks again......Tim

you need to check that stator, there are some procedures to check the coils on the stator using an ohmmeter to test for resistance "ohms" but that is not 100% effective, try to check te stator visually, the cables that are attached into it... post your results...

by the way, the modules are tight sealed and it is not a good practice to repair them but instead of frying more modules, check that stator first before trying another unit

Ok, thanks for the response......maybe CDI has the testing proceedure for these components. Regards, Tim
