"I have a 1978-35 Evinrude. The engine sat for 9 years unused. Prior to storage it had new coils, wiring, startor motor, cables, etc. The engine had 94 and 100 PSI on the cylinders. I got the motor running. I changed the water pump, head cover gasket and found no thermostat is being used, cleaned the carb etc. The motor ran for 1 hour on 2 separate runs then stalled and would not start. I found water in the bottom cylinder. I removed the cylinder head and found a blown head gasket. With the new head gasket in place the motor has 140 PSI in each cylinder. The motor immediately started and ran for 15 minutes then backfired and stalled. Now it only turns over continously without the plugs installed, but has no signs of water in the cylinders. It still has 140 PSI compression on both cylinders. The motor will only turn over in short bursts with the plugs installed and acts like water lock in the cylinders. There is an oily substance that is coming out of the bottom of the power head. The motor at some point in time looks to have over heated as the green paint is now gold in color- Do I have a cracked block? Where do i look next? Help"
