1978 rude 75 hp idle

Why would a motor idle faster with the cover off then idle slower once the motor cover is replaced?

Running in a test tank or barrel ???------------Look for an exhaust leak if out on the boat.------------Look for a bad sparkplug wire ( shorting to the cover ).-----------If running in a test tank it may be running on it's own exhaust.

I am running the motor with a flush attachment. The cover is fiberglass so it should not shortout to the cover. Correct? The air vents on the cover are unrestricted so it should be getting plenty of air. Any suggestions?

The cover is fibreglass I know that !!--------The bracket is not ----------No more suggestions ---sorry.

check exhaust gasket on exhaust tube going to lower unit . had 112 johnson that did exact same thing and that's what it was.

Check the bolts around the exhaust cover and found some were not tight. I will check the tube also thanks.
