1978 Mercury 500 stator question

What other model years use the same stator as mine? It’s Mercury #5112447. Also what horsepower range will this stator work? Thinking up to 90 horse models of this vintage?

Fwiw I have a local marine supply place that has the OEM Mercury replacement stator in stock for $440. I asked why so much for such an old engine and he said “you need to buy a newer motor”. I replied this old girl still ran great until figuring out the original stator is bad (not bad after 42 years old). It was silence on the other end of the phone lol.

The age / value / price you paid for your motor has nothing to do with the price of the parts needed to make it run properly

You could consider going used also. On these old girls I often call Tim's Outboard in Hackensack MN....and Mike or Dan will "cherry pick" one for you....218 682 2331. Actually I might have one here too, but it would have come in an auction, years ago......and I would have to dig around. After all, once you put a new stator on and start your motor....you got a used one anyway.

Thanks timguy for the info! I bought a non Mercury brand stator. I learned of course after the fact the aftermarket stators aren’t sealed with the rubber like coating that the OEM ones have. Hence why Mercury gets up to almost $200 extra for the same stator for this motor.

Anyhow the aftermarket stator works and I’m getting good spark. However now I’m having other issues I’d better make a separate thread for.
