"I have a 1978 470 that runs awesome once it is started, and after initial start fires every time. It does stall when shifting into gear when colder then 130 though. The motor has 520 hours on it and has been meticulously maintained. I would appreciate any advice on the starting issue and stalls when cool? Thanks in advance for your help."

Check your basic tune items first, plugs, points, condenser, leads, distributor cap, rotor.
if it has points ignition I would be replacing the points and the condenser before I did anything.

Clean out the choke STOVE PIPE

Clean out the choke STOVE PIPE and manifold passages so the hot exhaust can get to the choke unless the choke was repllaced w/an electric type then check it to see if it is operating and the heater coil isn't burned out.

Spray the choke and butterfly bushings w/carb cleaner so they are not tight and then add a few drops of light elec. motor bearing oil to the bushings and linkages.

"You might also want to verify

"You might also want to verify that the choke is operating correctly at all. Remove your flame arrestor and watch the choke when you crank. It should be closed, and then begin to open slowly as the engine warms.

If it is not closed right at the first crank, then close it manually and try again; this just verifies that the choke is indeed the problem. After this, you'll have to figure out why the choke is sticking open at cold start, if this is turns out to be the problem."
