"Just picked up a 1978 (could be off by a year either way) Model 700 70 HP Merc, and I'll be darned if I can figure out how to unlatch the cowling. I've poked and pried, but keep feeling like I'm going to break something. Can anyone help a Merc rookie out?"

Likely on the front cover. Look at the bottom and squeeze the two levers together. The rest is easy.

"Maybe I'm blind. Ikia - can't seem to find any levers, although I can push the face plate down a bit. I think there is a release there, I'm just missing it. Michael, I think you are thinking of the 1960's 700 that has a large silver face. This is mostly black, although there is some silver around the Merc logo. Any way, no knob. I'll see if I can take and attach some pics."

"Sardie can or split cowl (gullwing doors)?
Wrap arounds has a knob.
Split Cowl: Reach up under the bottom lip of the back cover piece. There is a finger latch that slides. Maybe the tab is broken off, than it gets harder."

"Here is a pic of the front of the cowl. Still not finding a release mechanism. I feel like a real bonehead.

"Badger: Thanks for the additional encouragement. I went back and looked again and there it was. A little lever, dead-center, bottom front. It was smaller than I expected, and I had earlier mistaken it for part of the steering arm. Pushing it to the side let me rock the bottom of faceplate forward and off to reveal the two latches holding the rest of the cowl on. Great! The motor looks pretty good, and I was able to see the motor's tag and verify that it is actually a 1977 model. I'll try to fire it up tomorrow. Thanks to all!
