I have a 1978 Mariner 40 HP BEL with serial number 676 BL 404835. Pictured below is the ignition panel with kill switch and choke. I need to replace this entire panel and am wondering if anyone has any advice as to a specific way to replace this entire assembly. It appears that some of the wiring has been spliced by the previous owner to connect a fish finder, which I do not have anymore. You can see in the picture the exact connection that goes to the engine. Thank you. Matt

I need to replace the panel because the choke switch has mostly rusted at the connecting point, the ignition assembly has other wires spliced into it by the previous owner which have shorted before and the kill switch is also very rusty. It is easy to find a generic ignition switch but I was hoping to find one that would connect to this connection to my engine.

If you have the wiring diagram, you could make your own panel. Not hard to do (did mine). All you need is an ignition switch and a horn button for the choke.

This particular engine is a Yamaha built mariner. That panel is identical to the Yamaha controls of the late '70's. So a Yamaha dealer will be able to help out as well. But if all you want to replace is the choke, then a one way toggle switch from any marine store will do_Or as Jeff says a push button horn switch. Cut out the spliced wires and resolder to key switch.

The current panel is rebuildable as has been stated. If you have a Merc./Mariner wiring diagram it makes the rebuild much easier. If you use a toggle switch get a momentary toggle that springs back when released. If you are not competent w/a soldering iron and wiring schematic look for an electronic repair shop...they could do it for a nominal fee. Removing spliced wires is not difficult. Making a solid solder joint is easy if done properly. Make sure you use flux or solder paste and slip on the shrink tubing 1st. The joint should be shiney and not frosty looking which is a cold joint that will fail.

Forgot to mention this: The ignition switch I bought off eBay has the push-to-choke feature, which eliminates the horn button as well.
