"I'm a young Army soldier and just bought my first boat. The engine (1978 Johnson model J140TL78C) was manufactured before the ethol
alcohol addition to the commercially produced gasoline. I just wanted to ask for some advice about the effects of ethol on the gaskets and o-rings of the engine. Also, the engine/boat has been sitting in a garage for several years. Are there any special things/procedures I need to consider before starting the engine after all this time. Thanks in advance fellas. Steve"

"You will need to remove and replace all the rubber. That would be fuel pump dia, hoses, fuel line connectors with "O" rings. Then the water pump will need to be replaced as the rubber has now taken a set and may have become brittle.

First do a compression test. Save your self a lot of work on something which doesn't deserve it. (have you met Ammee? oops that's another story!)

Next grease all the fittings with marine grease. steer the boat so the rod goes into the cable before you grease it or your done steering.

Change the lower unit oil with the right stuff from the marina in a plastic tooth past tube that lets you squeeze the oil in from below to the top vent hole.

Get a new battery, maybe some fuel additive like "Sea Foam, or Ring Free" Fresh reg gas and some tc-wc oil and mix 50-1.

Your set?"
