Hello everyone! New to the forum, I have spent days scouring through different threads but keep finding conflicting information and am hoping to get some more straight forward answers. I apologize if anything is redundant.
I purchased an old Johnson outboard (unsure of engine hours) and have it nearly running well enough to get on the water, but am still facing some low speed idle issues.
I live ~4200 ft and most the lakes i go to are around 5000 ft. The motor holds idle perfectly fine here on my property, but everytime i get up to the lake and put it in the water it starts to bog out when the warm up lever is all the way down. Plugs show that it’s running rich.
Unfortunately it seems these carbs dont have an idle fuel ratio screw but instead rely on orifice plugs. Link and sync is done and timing is good. Carbs had a going through and spent some time in the sonic cleaner.
I guess what im hoping to have cleared up is whether the idle orifice jets (top/front of carb behind a plug bolt) control the gas or the air, because i am not sure if i need to size up or down to lean out my mixture. Also, if anyone has suggestions for dealing with the idle issue aside from re-jetting, i would be most grateful. Seems crazy to me that there is no ratio screw or adjustment that i can make directly on the carb.
Thanks heaps!
