"Hey Joe,
I got a good one for ya. That old 1978 Johnson model number 7oEL78C runs 2200 rpm at wot in the water. Let me start over, in the water it idle good. When I put it in gear it run alright until I push that baby in WOT she want run but 2200 rpm. I can take it out of gear and the engine will run up to 4500 rpm. But put it back in gear and she want run but 2200 rpm .. I need help the motor runs to good to it in the junk."
 
All motors will rev up in nuet

All motors will rev up in nuetral and it tells you nothing at all. So start with a compression check and check that you have spark that will jump a gap of 7/16" or better on EACH cylinder.There is no point in guessing on outboard motors.

"I have similar problem with a 74 Johnson 85hp. The problem started when I didn't open the air vent on the gas tank and it sucked the tanl flat. Compression is 145-150 all around. Spark jumps. Starts and idles great, Rev's up in neutral, Has NO punch or power in gear, boat won't plane. Any idea's?"
