Hello everyone. This is the first time i have ever posted on a forum in search of repair help. So bare with me! I will do my best to give you as many details as possible... Now, on to the motor!

Not to long ago a purchased a '78 Johnson 55hp outboard. It ran great and had been serviced prior to my purchase (on water hose). I was not able to water test it because it wasn't on a boat. But, everything seemed fine with it. Well, i got it rigged up on my boat, and put it in the water to test it, and it did fine other than it idled much lower, to the point it would die pretty quickly after putting it in neutral. I thought, no big deal, i'll just turn up the idle. Well, that didn't help. I've turned it up several times actually with little difference. But the main problem i'm having is, is that once i get the boat in the water and get the engine warmed up, it wants to die as soon as i start to give it throttle and get going. It seems to me like it's flooding/getting too much fuel, but i don't know for sure. It's very frustrating. Most of the time i have to slam the throttle to get past that stutter/die point, and it will stutter a little and get going. But not EVERY time... The motor does run fine on the top end. Pushes boat real nicely. But i'm just sick of it dying on me. I have to use the choke every single time i turn the key also. And i also have to use the warm up lever, even after the motor is warm. What is the deal? Here are some details about the motor:

New CDI/Power Pack
New water pump
New spark plugs
updated wiring harness
cleaned carbs (these do NOT have the adjustment valves)
coils are original to motor but work fine (i think)
Compression: TOP = 130 psi • BOTTOM = 115 psi (is this too far off?)
fuel line is new, gas tank is new
screen on fuel pump is clear
fuel pump is original
foot oil changed
engine oil = quicksilver pre mix, 50:1

Below are pics of the motor and the spark plugs. The left plug is from the bottom piston. As you can see it is darker than the top plug. I will also attach a link to a video of it running on a hose. So now i ask, how can i fix the problem of it dying every time i try to get going? Thanks!

You might want to inspect fuel pump diaphragm , which is a $ 6.00 part.--------I would expect to see 150 psi on my tester.-------You might want to remove cylinder head to have a look in there.----To me it sounds like you bought somebody else's problem and that happens all the time !----And does spark jump a gap of 3/8 " on both leads ?

The fuel pump diaphragm was going to be my next purchase. I did take it off and lightly blew into it. It didnt seem to have any leaks but, it may be a week diaphragm. Replacing the whole pump with a new one is my next step. The Johnson specs as far as compression (per the manual) is supposed to be 135psi for the motor. I was a bit surprised when i saw the bottom read 115... But, ive seen other outboards run fine for years like that. I'll keep running it if i can get this idle/die out problem fixed. I bought it from a trusted outboard mechanic, but i guess that doesn't mean anything anymore... I'll see what i can do about taking a peak in the head. What would i be looking for? Thanks!

Spark plug gap is perfect on both and both spark really well. Thanks!

The question was ---Does the spark jump a gap of 3/8" or more, yes or no ??------That testing does not involve sparkplugs at all.

Easy man... I didn't understand your question. And honestly i don't know how to answer that. So i cannot give you an answer. I'm not a master mechanic by any means. Just looking for some direction is all. Sorry...

What manual talks about 135 PSI on this motor ?----One sparkplug shows that the cylinder is running " cool " and testing needs to be done. Do some research on " spark testing "

Will do. I didnt know what "running cool" was a thing per piston. Atleast i've never heard that before, so thank you. I will do some research and see where i get. As far as the compression, one of our mechanics here in town had a book that listed manufacturer compressions. It had 135 listed for this motor. I found that same thing online a few months ago. If i find it, i'll post it for you. But, it's just a book. Idk if that's correct or not... I used to have a '71 50hp Johnson that had a perfect 150 pounds in both pistons. So, idk. Maybe i'll just sink it and make a reef.
