2 seasons ago while in the driveway fiddleing with the controls The control handle seemed to lock up in gear. I ruled out the cables and linkage's on the engine side. i also tried rotating the prop by hand to see if it was stuck in gear that way but no change.

I took apart the control handle. The only piece i found somwhat worn was the gear toothes plastic piece that seemed to select F or R. i replaced it and things seemed better. Nothing else appeared worn. But last season it did lock up on me once again.

Im not sure why id does this but seems to only happen when the engine is not running. It has never happend in the water either.

Anyone have thoughts on what I cold check? I would hate for it to happen in the water because it would be difficult to tear down on the lake.

The short shift lever within that control box has almost razor sharp teeth. If (when) one of those sharp teeth edges break off, the unit will assuredly lock up.

NOTE: Do not ever attempt to shift that engine into gear when it IS NOT running UNLESS you have someone spinning the propeller so as to align the shifter dog lobes with the gear shifter lobes. To do otherwise is simply inviting trouble!

Ok, good to know. So i was correct when i replaced the short skift lever. Thats what i did 2 years ago. I guess the problem was i shifted while not running. I think i was checking the cable operation while servicing the carbs. ill find a differnt way to do that next time. Thanks for the info
