1978 Johnson 35 Water Pump????

I changed the water pump out & the brass connector on the shift control lever had been stripped & a larger size bolt had been put in. Got to the lake to try it out & it jumped out of gear, couldn't hold it in! COme to find out the shift control rod was a loose & dangling! Check the brass connector & the larger bolt threads were stripped!
Took foot back off, replaced brass connector, (No, didn't turn shift control rod in gearcase!), adjusted shifting , tried in test tank in gear, etc. Seemed to work OK. Got to Lake, under load, it JUMPS! Like you hit a log. Doesn't jump out of gear tho..
I added an extra spring to hold it in forward. My thinking was the detent lever may have been bent & not holding.
Sounds to me like the clutch dog ears may have gotten rounded from previous test try! Which was only four attempts!
Anybody have any ideas?

I've never repaired the later model foot, only the split case type.
"They" Tell me you need a special tool for inserting the seals & a "sleeve" for holding the shift detent spring & balls in place while inserting into case.
Probably the best thing is to find a new used foot, but I'll bet that will be a long & difficult search!

Any help is greatly appreciated!

The tool for the detent balls is not that " special "----Made my own from a piece of pipe using a hacksaw.----Availability of used units depends a great deal on your location.
