"I have a 1978 9.9 evinrude. At the beginning of the season everything was working great. Lately the shifter seems to be getting stuck in 'forward' and will not go back to 'neutral'. I am able to fiddle with it and find (with motor off)if the throttle is all the past 'slow' i am able to shift back to 'neutral' and the motor starts and runs well. I do not know much about motors or names of parts, but i took off the cover and saw that the shifter was getting caught on metal motor plate thingy? If anyone knows what I am talking about, any ideas on how to fix it? Thanks"
