1978 Evinrude 6HP only runs in Choke

Hey All,

I just entered the boat owners world and bought a 1978 Evinrude 6HP w/a 14 foot Aluminum V Hull. The seller warned me of some problems with the motor that he was unsure of, but was able to start it, and it idled in choke. He was willing to let it go for pretty cheap, so I figured it would be a fun project, and hopefully a dependable motor someday. For the last few weeks, it has been able to start up and idle in choke, but dies when the choke is opened. Yesterday I tried to start it, and had some trouble. I can get it to run for 10-15 seconds until it dies (still in choke), but only with a generous amount of starting fluid. I finally have some time to do a Carb clean/rebuild this week, so I hope that solves the problem, but I'm a little worried it might be a little more serious.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks
Chris

Be sure to remove the high speed jet in the bottom of the float bowl for cleaning.--------All the fuel must go thru it .------------------Having to use choke clearly indicates fuel blockage.-----------Make sure you have spark at each plug that will jump a gap of 1/4" or better with a snap you can hear.-------If you do not know when the waterpump impeller was last replaced , then you MUST install a new one.
