Hello! I am new to this forum and a novice with boats/engines..... I have a 1978 35 HP Evinrude electric start, short shaft engine (not sure of the model number and can't seem to locate it) that I keep blowing the water pump on. I mainly run on slow no wake lakes so I idle this engine a lot. When it runs it will "cough" occasionally on idle and it doesn't seem to "pee" a whole lot either. It is difficult to start after sitting a couple of weeks of no use. When I do get it started the engine races and blows the water pump. Any thoughts as to why I keep blowing the water pump? Am I doing something wrong on startup? Any other parts I should consider replacing as well? I work on my own vehicles so I am going to tackle this myself. Any other thoughts or words of wisdom? Thank you!
