Currently working on getting my Dad's old engine running. Have bought many parts for this engine on this site. One part I needed to replace was the rubber bellows boot which isolates the throttle lever arm from the outside where the lever goes up through the lower port side cowl. In order to do this the arm and a spring that connects the throttle arm to a lever on the magneto have to be removed. Although difficult, I managed to get the spring off. It's OMC part number 321721. It's a VERY strong spring that has both ends nearly 180 degrees to each other and has to be compressed to about a 75-90 degree angle between the two ends to attach the end loops.
Now the real challenge, despite trying to compress the spring, trying to connect one side then vice versa I am not able to sufficiently compress the spring to link up the two arms. I have the original manual for the engine and it merely states "connect the spring". I'm a big guy and it's impossible to connect up this spring and get it to attach to the grooved post on the throttle lever arm. Have tried pliers, vice grips, screwdrivers and no luck! It's also a tight space area in which to work to boot.
Has anyone ever reconnected this spring? Is there a specific assembly order, or a special tool to be able to compress the spring to allow it to connect to both arms?.
