I bought this pontoon boat with a 78 evinrude 115 on it . The motor cranked and ran when I bought it and the next day just fine. I was starting it with a 550 ca deep cycle battery . Well the next day I couldn't get it to turn worth a dang so I thought it was the battery . Went and bought a 750 ca deep cycle battery it acted the same way just barly getting the starter to turn then just quit . So I took thst battery back and got a starting battery 625 or something any how the same thing ? Put the original battery back on and no different. Does anyone no why this is happening . Do I need some crazy huge battery?

Ok so one of the brushes on the starter is completely broke off from wear. And the others are just about to go also do you think that may be the problem? You would think it needs all the brushes to get all the power right? Anyhow do you think a rebuild kit would work or whole new starter?

How do I test the armature? I found the brushes on eBay for 15$ where can I get them for five? And thanks for all the responses

Should read INFINITY on an ohmeter going from commutator to the shaft.----I get those brushes from a local starter / alternator shop $5.00 .----Made in china I am sure but no problems at all.

Okay got a new one for ya. Boat ran great all day today till I was heading back to the launch. I was flying down the river then all the sudden the motor sounded like it went into to neutral and I lost power . Well I revved it a couple times and went nowhere. Got her home took prop off hoping it was a spun hub and it didn't look like a spun hub fired up the motor and put it in gear and the shaft is not spinning?

Well I think this is going to be expensive.------When you bought the boat did you have any inspection / service work done ?---------Change oil and new impeller ?-----Motor checked by someone experienced with these motors ?

No this con artist told me he had his guy check it out and it runs like new and blah blah blah. It did start up and run great I can attest to that . But I dropped the ball on the oil thing I needed to see it in action and figured I'd change out the oil this week sometime. I guess I'll have to start tearing it down to find the problem . I tell ya it really ran good up until that moment.
