This has been an issue since I put the engine and controls on my pontoon (2 seasons). The friction control knob is loose. I did not check to see if this was a problem when I took it off the original boat. Thanks for responding. Danny

They are either seizing internally from rust or there is a bad kink somewhere. I've seen cables that were modified by a felow to help prolong their life. He drilled and tapped both ends of the cables and fitted grease nipples. He was aproached by a few other boat owners to do their cables as well. This was done on new cables.... not to unseize used cables.

Soory dvan..memory getting the best of me...it was the steering cable that was modified. Started to think about how he would have drilled and tapped gear/throttle cables and realized that is impossible.

"Thanks for responding. I did have to loop the cables one time to shorten them up though. I guess I can remove the loop, stretch out the cables and try again. I hope this works. If not, I guess I will need to buy replacements."

"A loop before the motor is a good thing, helps reduce kinking from back and forth motion and up and down when you tilt the engine. My cables to my main power have a loop in them, they are 17 years old and still working well"

Take the cables off of the control box arms and engine then pull back and forth by hand...it will be the cables..they don't last forever....shorter life when they don't get used regularily.

"try to force some lube into or try to soak in a small tub.while working them,or i might just be time to replace them."
