1978 4HP Johnson Seahorse

I have a really dumb question that I need help with. I have an old 4hp two cylinder model about 1978. The pull rope at the top wont go back in and has jammed and I cant figure out how to take the top cover off. Can anybody pls help me?

A latch under the back of the lower cover on a 78 model ( and earlier) see HERE

I think you have a later model SEE HERE for 1979 and later

hi all,
I purchased a boat with a 78 Johnson Seahorse 4hp and it ran perfectly for the last 2 summers. being new to things i've likely neglected the correct maintenance practices. while getting things ready to put my boat back in the water this spring, i've noticed the steering is very stiff... not seized but very stiff. I was looking for a there does not appear to be any nipple to add grease through. what should i do to get my steering in working order again?
