The top end of the crankshaft is splined, and the flywheel hub will slide onto the splines in only one position.
If you removed the flywheel from the hub, (on most models this can be done) it is important to replace it in the same position. You can usually do this by examining the mating surfaces of the flywheel and hub. There should be some telltale scratches or worn areas on the paint that can be used to line things up properly. If not, then you have to replace the hub, and turn the crank until the #1 piston is at top dead center. You can then line up the timing mark on the flywheel with the pointer on the top of the front half of the crankcase, and attatch the flywheel to the hub in this position.
