"The motor will not start when

"The motor will not start when sitting for a couple of days. I can spray gas in the carburators to get it started and after it starts I can go down the lake a little way and stop and fish,then when I get ready to go it barely turn the key and cranks right up.The motor runs good after you get it going.I thought it wasnt getting gas somehow.anyone one have any ideas, would greatly appreiciate it.will not fire at all until i spray gas in the carburaters."

"Remove the carburetor face plate so that you can check to see that the choke butterfly is operational when you engage the choke. Is it?

It should slam completely shut when you either toggle the choke switch or push the key in to engage it, whichever system you might have."

"i tilt the motor all the way down and pull the gas all the way up and choke it.when this all started i was going down the lake and everything just quit.i got stopped and tried to crank it and it cranked right up,but wwhen i tried to take off it cut out but finally got going.it done this a few times.then i changed all the plugs and put seafoamand high test gas to try to clean it out.so after that,i spray gas in the carburaters to start it, and everything runs fine but i think it used to run about 5 to 10 mph faster. its weird i know but i appreiciate the help."

Have engine in vertical running position.

Pump fuel primer bulb up hard.

Raise warm up lever as needed to advance the timer base/throttle slightly. For the first time, take the hood off to see when that timer base moves (a reference sighting).

Crank engine and have electric choke/primer solenoid engaged at the same time. When engine starts, release key and choke.

Is this your starting procedure?"

"If what I listed is your exact starting procedure, and fuel is getting to the carburetors and the choke operates as it should..... and the engine starts and runs when you spray a fuel mixture into the carburetor throats BUT will not start otherwise (when cold), then I would strongly suspect that the carburetors are somewhat fouled, clogged, gummed.

My suggestion is that you remove, clean thoroughly, and rebuild the carburetors using complete carburetor kits."

thank you i was hoping it would be something a little more simpler.how hard is it to get in a carb and rebuild it. 1 to 10.i have alittle bit of mech. skills but never worked on carbs. do you have the rebuild kits at your ebay store. how much?

I have a 1978 johnson 85 hp.

I have a 1978 johnson 85 hp.
my engine would not start at first then after that it would start every time. I replace the power pack at cost of 125.00 That solved the problem. moisture was entering the sealed power pack and then evaporating after fist start
That solved problem. I have an entry under 1978 johnson dated 5-15 see if you have any ideas.
