1978 175hp Evinrude

I have a Ranger boat with a '78 evinrude 175hp, the engine grinds when put into gear. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thanx

Are you trying to put it into gear s l o w l y? Be sure to shift it without hesitation.

yes, grinding seems to start between neutral and forward gear just before acceleration.
I'm thinking there might be some kind of adjustmen either on the motor itself or with the throttle control lever on the boat itself. Any ideas?

No grinding going into reverse only forward gear. Thanx

I'd disconnect the shift cable and try shifting into forward at the engine. If it doesn't grind...it's a cable adjustment problem. If it continues to act the same you'll need to tear the lower unit down and check for worn parts (shift dog, etc.).
