"Hello all. New to forum. Havi

"Hello all. New to forum. Having an issue with the motor shifting into reverse. Goes into forward just fine, but even with a HEAVY pull for reverse, no joy. Anything right off that you can throw at me? I know it's within the engine/LU itself and not with the remote controls in any way (that already came apart). Any and all help will be more than greatly appreciated! Thanks much!"

"Anybody? I'm also having an issue with the motor trimming up or down; its stuck in the full UP position. This is a new development as of the last time the boat was out...this last weekend. Noticed that sometimes you would have to go the opposite direction to get the unit to "catch" then could go the desired direction. Maybe air in the hyd. line? Is there a reservoir I can check and possible bleed? This boat is relatively new to me (working on a boat in general...have a decently high mechanical aptitude)...so any and all help on these two issues will certainly be greatly appreciated!! Valuable fishing time is being lost!! LOL, THANKS!!!

"Also, in regards to the first post...I don't even think that the unit is going back into neutral from forward drive. Unit is not supposed to crank if still in gear, and since its not cranking...I'm assuming its stuck in DRIVE. Traced cable back to the shaft in the engine that looks like it runs down into the LU. PLEASE HELP...THANKS!"

"Lee,
Easy way to know if its stuck in gear is turn the flywheel if the prop rotates you are stuck in gear
Disconnect the cable at the shift rod and manually shift it and test it."

"Need some advice...I just bought a 70 hp merc o/b, it runs fine but will not go into gear. its almost like a clutch is slipping in a car. Any suggestions on where to start?"

"Andrew,

Thanks much for the reply. I ended up disconnecting the drive cable from the control unit up front in order to "half split" my problem area. Ended up shifting just fine...turns out I found the problem within the remote control unit; the little ball bearing that "selects" F-N-R was stuck somehow, LOL.

Once again, thanks much for the response! Moving on to problem #2!!"

"Ok on problem 2 , for starter

"Ok on problem 2 , for starters trim it all the way up lock it in place and remove the filler plug oil should drain out of it. Very important if not simply add trim fluid. If oil level is ok check for color in other words is water in the system this can cause the issues u mentioned simply because water does not compress like oil can ..
Could be water, or lack of fluid or last but not lease bad valves or motor."
