1978 115 hp Johnson Oil Leaking

19Boat

I have a 1978 115 hp Johnson outboard that is leaking red fluid (oil). It appears to be coming from the power head / engine and runs down the midsection. I can't identify a specific location where the fluid leaks.

The fluid is the same color as the two stroke oil I use, and smells like gasoline. It appears that there is more fluid when I run the motor connected to a hose / motor flusher, but after a day on the water there is very little fluid.

Aside from this leak, the motor runs great...starts and idles well, and still pushes an 18' fiberglass boat at 32mph.

Is it two stroke oil? Why is it there? How serious is this problem?

Remove cover in front of carburetors.-----Squeeze primer bulb and look for leaks.----Bulb must go hard.

Thanks for the advice.

I pulled the motor cover and there is red fluid around / below the cover in from of the carburetors (I'm not able to pull the cover off now...I can get to it tomorrow). What am I looking for...bad gasket?

Is the wee hose that goes from the airbox to the lower part of the block in place ?-----When you squeeze the bulb it should go tight.-----You should not see fuel leaking anywhere.

I was able to get to the motor today....

The hose was in place but not fully seated (about 1/8" from fully seated); I was able get it fully in place. The bulb is hard and I don't see fuel leaking.
