I acquired a mercury 500 a while back and am just getting around to paying attention to it. I found that it would not start and in looking into the problem, I found that there was no spark at all. Naturally, I started looking into ignition problems somewhere down the line only to find that the remote control box that came with it had a 7 pin plug and the and the engine side plug was a 6 pin plug. The extra pin on the remote side happens to be the one that carries current to the ignition system and since there is no corresponding pin on the engine side, no current is going to the ignition system. Clearly the remote that came with it is for a different engine and I have no idea what engine that would be.
Rather than spend a few hundred to replace either the remote control box or the wiring, I wouild like to know if it is possible to use the current 7 pin cable, plugged in as usual and just run another wire from the control box or right from the battery to the engine for current to the ignition system. Not having heard the engine run before, I'm reluctant to spend the $ to replace the remote controls until I am satisfied that it runs well enough to warrant the expenditure. Not having chased down the remaining wires in the cable from the remote to the engine, I'm not sure if i will fry something else in the effort and would appreciate any guidance that will let me start this engine before I spend any appreciable money on it. If it runs as it should, I will repair it properly. Thanks for any help.
