1977 Mercury 150 hp inline 6 - Switchbox issues

I have a 1977 mercury 150hp inline 6. I have replaced the switch box twice. When I install a new switch box the engine runs great. I can stay on the lake all day with no problems but once I bring it home and park it for a couple days it wont start and when I test the switch box it is bad. I can not figure out what is happening with the box. Does anyone have any ideas???? Please let me know, my boy is waitiing to get on the lake and fish.

Try jiggling the wires that go to the switch box. Sounds like on the ride home, they are moving and shorting out, and when you put a new switch box on they make continuity again.

The wireing harness turns to powder after a no. of yrs. Look closely everywhere. Belive me I know from experience. Dust to dust they say.

I replaced the wiring because it was brittle. Any other possibilities? Could the "pick up" inside the distributor cause it to short out? Or a bad connection from the rotor to the cap???

The pick up could be bad but not likely with what you are discribing. It realy sounds like a wiring problem. Are all connections clean and tight.
