1977 merccruiser 165 ford inline6

had new cables put in with bellows. took it out twice and now no reverse only forword gear. If I shift if forword works fine when I shift it back I hit neutral fine then I pull back for what I think is reverse and I have forword again. I'm Baffled did a cable come loose?? Thank You Nomind111
