I just recently bought a 1977

I just recently bought a 1977 boat with a 1977 55 HP Johnson. I took the boat out to the lake and I got it to run but it would not shift into gear. When I moved the shifter forward it would just rev the engine but not put it in gear. It will also not go into reverse at all. I just put fresh gear oil in it as well. When I took it out of the water. i opened the drain screw to check the oil. No water came out but the oil was a greenish color. It was not nice clean oil as I had put in the night before. I wanted to know if the oil is supposed to be that color or if anyone thinks I have a bad seal that is letting water into the gear case. Also I wanted to know if anyone could tell me why the engine was throttleing up but not engaging into gear and why it was not going into reverse at all. Thanks

"If this is a regular white Evinrude/Johnson control box, look at the shift cable at the engine end. Does it move when you push the single lever in either direction. It should provide 15° of shift movement before engaging any throttle movement.

Did you by any chance hook up the cables at the engine backwards?

If not a regular OMC conrol box, what kind of control do you have?"
