"I'm wondering if anyone can help me. My motor was running like a dream, and we were almost back at the boat ramp when it just stopped running. It turns over when I try to start it again, the prop still turns etc....so it's obviously something electrical at the motor itself. If it was a car I'd suggest the distributer or something similar....but my knowledge of outboards is limited. Can anyone give me any clues as to what the problem might be. Cheers"

"Hey, I have a 1979 70 HP,I had something Similar happen to me. And I was Idling back to the boat ramp and it just stopped on me.And would turn over and not start... And I could see unburnt Fuel On the water, I guess coming out out of the exhaust pipe. It was like it was flooded, Well I used the trolling Motor and to get back, it was like 50 yards, Let it sit on the trailer for a few days and I took it out yesterday and it runs fine again.I guess maybe it was flooded. You might want to check your emergency cut off switch, Those go bad or just need a wiggle. This Probably doesnt Help you I just thought I would let you know I had the something similar happen."

"Cheers Mark, and yeah, I'm hoping it's something simple as the fishing has been superb lately and I NEED to be on the water."

"Michael..... Assuming that you have compressison on all cylinders (do you?). With the spark plugs removed, check the spark which should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real SNAP!

The 7/16" gap is important. Do not attempt to check the spark by using the spark plugs as this is a waste of time.

If not spark, disconnect the main RED electrical plug at the engine and re-test for spark. If you now have spark, in all probability, the ignition switch is shorting out intermitently.

To test the ignition switch, re-connect that RED connector, turn the key to the ON position (engine NOT running), then remove the black/yellow kill wire from the ignition switch. If you have spark with the wire disconnected BUT no spark with it connected, the ignitin switch is faulty.

Let us know what you find.

"Thanks Joe. I've taken it in to my local, and after doing all you have said above and a bit more it looks as though the stator will need replacing......so she's booked in for repairs on thursday. Now I just have to figure out how to break it to the missus...lol"
