1977 Johnson 15hp

got the parts today and look - it's bigger so it will fit!
....and it did

Did quick installation and testing/adjustment, and works like a charm!!!! Very pleased - to say at least!
Now trying to find this rubber seal that goes around the cowling - MarineEngine does not have it. Does anyone know about possible source??

as I am waiting for throttle cable - finally sealed plywood with an epoxy - finish is little rough, but fallowing coats of varnish should cure that.
Planning the steering pulley/cable system.

Hi, great job. For seal try Tim's Outboard Hackensack MN 218 682 2331. Minnesota is only 6 months boating. Should have a clean used one there. Ship same day 52 years in business. We both started in 1967.

so turned out that there was no seal in Hackensack, but they give me a phone number to Anglers Choice that had one in stock - with an original Johnson part number - it's on the way to WA
Thank you timguy!

starting working on pulleys and cable steering stuff - anyone knows where to find tension springs??
I think I will not have pulleys at the motor. Looking at the picture: right cable will go to the left and both will go forward to the steering on the side of the boat.

Made me think back to my start in the trade (1960)... boat already in water, my first rigging job (cable/pulley steering). AH!.. all done, off I went. Turning to port, boat turned to starboard... very exciting! :)

Joe, those were the days, eh? Maybe for you.......but I'm STILL making mistakes, life wouldn't be right without mistakes, would it?

Its great that you still share your knowledge, wisdom, and perhaps just as important.......humor, with all of us here on the forum. Its one of my goals to meet you someday. All of my family has now moved to Florida.

If you can give me the overall length you need and then take a fish scale and stretch a determined distance, then get me a weight......I will see what I have. Say you want a 3 inch stretch, then see how many pounds pressure at that length you need.

....this seems to be way over my pay scale :)
......first need to get a fish scale .....
Get we go with a generic one for 15HP motor??

Top of page... Hover cursor over "Boat Accessories"... Click "Steering & Controls... Click "Mechanical Steering"... 091814-1 is the spring.

You need two of them. It's not that complicated!

Springs on order. I am back from Omaha vacations.....work will continue.

.................still dreaming about this boat......$15K in British Columbia Canada :)

OK, everything is in place.
did some throttle adjustments but I'm not sure what to do. Tiller operated motors have Started, Idle, Run positions.....don't know where those points are in remote controlled motor.
Tried to start the motor, managed to start it few times but it would die seconds later. After disconnecting gas line and cranking the motor for around 10 - 15 second it did start and run at idle until run out of gas. Has good spark, and spark plugs are getting pretty wet. Did cleaned theu more then few time during this process. Gas was one year old but got the one without ethanol. Got fresh gas and will try again......
I am pretty sure that is just the matter of adjusting the throttle to get it to run. Need help to do the adjustment.

Made the seats out of HDepot ply....want to use it this summer and make new seats from marine ply later on. They are removable.

Beautiful job. Can you get us a few close up pictures of your linkage at the motor, and position at idle?

OK, first two pictures showing where everything is with current throttle adjustment or the lack of it. I think when this was the position when I had it idle a little.
Thirt picture is showing this part of the carburetor that has a mounting screw that is not what it supposed to be, and that can cause problems - don't think that will prevent the motor from starting, nevertheless I need to get a correct one.
So let's start here and hopefully you will see what is out of whack here.
Thank you !

Yep, that's the old style "pressure" tank from the 1950's but it's obviously been converted to a single line tank setup with the fuel primer bulb whereas it can be attached and used on the later model engines.

Looks like everything is dry and rusty/oxidized. My thinking is that the stator plate is too far retarded to idle properly at that position. With the overall condition of your motor, I will bet that the idle stop screw unit is missing or broken off at the port side lower cowling. This HAS to be operational in order to effectively control idle stop. You can't trust cable adjustments to position the stator to correct idle position. Can you get us a photo of the area on the motor aforementioned? With closer inspection the tank could also be in a condition that would allow water to enter as well as inadequate venting. Nothing that I would allow to leave my shop, no clamps, etc....problems waiting to happen. I wouldn't be caught with THAT outfit out in the wilderness......the motor needs some service clean, up and lubrication. For instance that cam follower unit on the carb appears to be completely dry. The bendix/starter drive gear is dry, screws missing from air silencer, the adjustment for neutral start speed is completely in the wrong direction it should be pushed all the way forward not the way backwards. This thing is a mess. A little adjustment, cleaning, oil, and grease can go a long way.

Good news: I DID get it to start it. Motor runs great while pressing on cam follower......will not idle without it.
Thank you for your note Tim and Joe. I will lubricate the parts that you have mentioned. What to do about the position of the cam follower still don't know.
Here are few pictures I took tonight. Hopefully that will help me to understand what I need to do here for the motor to start, ide and run smoothly.
Thank you !

As I suspected the entire idle adjustment stop screw mechanism is missing. This is a necessary part in order for you start the motor especially with the remote control.
On the starboard side of the motor notice the 2 stainless steel phillips head screws which have to be loosened and that stop mechanism slid forward all the way to the end of the slots in the opposite direction where they are now. That will allow more throttle advancement in order to start the engine while in neutral.
