"Hello, I am new to this board and new to outboards all together. I have just bought my first boat, it's a 14 ft lund with a 1977 Evinrude 9.9, at least I think it is because the serial number on it is #10725A and all the literature I can find says that is a '77. On to my question. I bought the boat/motor last fall, and it ran OK for a few minutes in the driveway with muffs on. I winterized it and pulled it out this spring and could not start it. I put new plugs in and still nothing, I checked the plugs to see if they were firing and only the one plug was making spark when removed from the engine but still in the wire. In my shadetree opinion that would make the coil possibly bad, correct? Now, onto my really BIG problem. My motor is supposedly a 1977, but the pictures of coils that I have found for a 1977 9.9 evinrude look like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Johnson-Evinrude-OMC-ignition-coil-584561-OUTBOAR D-PART_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247QQcategoryZ31284QQihZ008QQi temZ180219768264QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V
and not just that one, I have found many that say they are for a 1977 9.9 and they look just like that. Now, on the otherhand the ones for the 1973-1976 9.9 look like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=330231671375& ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=014
And that looks just like the one on my motor. I have spent at least 4 hours a day for the last week on finding out which one I need, but no one knows. The local marine shop says they have what I need (I haven't seen it and don't have the model number so don't know which one it is) but they want close to 70 bucks for it and I would much rather get one for a lot cheaper than that, therefore I am using ebay and other websites to find it. I have been to at least 150 websites looking for information on serial numbers interchanging over the years. OMC numbers, Sierra numbers, etc. etc. I am at my wits end, and now I am here. Hopefully someone can help me!
Thank you in advance for anything you can do for me. Sorry about the long post but I was trying to be as descriptive as possible.
