"I purchased this boat and motor this weekend and I am getting ready to fill the tank up. However I am not sure what the oil\fuel mixture ratio is and also I don't know if I should run premium regular or if I should buy lead substitute to put in the gas. Also, it seems that the battery is having a hard time staying charged. The battery is a one year old Interstate. What kind of charging systems do these outboards have and what do I need to look for if the battery is not the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated."

"That engine has a 12 amp alternator. The fuel/oil ratio would be 50/1. A octane rating of 87 unleaded will be fine. No additive is needed.

Check for a battery drain by removing the wires from the positive battery post, then connecting either a amp meter, or volt meter set to its lowest DC voltage reading between the positive battery post and those wires. A drain would register on the meter."

"Your fuel to oil ratio is 50-1. The 1979 manual recommends 89 octane or better. (Regular is 87) I suspect most people use regular, however. Your engine probably has an alternator built under the flywheel, which puts out about 9 amps. Try measuring battery voltage with the engine off, and then running. If it doesn't rise, you probably have a charging issue. If it does rise, you probably have a battery issue. An manual for your engine (try Ebay) would be a great investment. I recommend factory manual, and not aftermarket. Good luck!"

"Test the cells with an acid tester (you know a glass tube with a float). You can easily see the condition (charged or discharged).
Charge the battery to full with a separate charger, and redo the "float test" after a couple of days.
