"'77 Johnson 9.9. Seems like I'm getting excessive black oil out 4 holes on lower unit, through prop, and where lower unit bolts to engine. Use 50:1 oil/gas ratio. Could this be carb adjuestment ?

History:

- Rebuilt carb (wouldn't idle - idles nice now)
- No water out tell tale so replaced water pump. Squirts great from tell-tale now
- Replaced thermostat (when apart, used hose to spray water up copper water tube, when lower unit off, and seemed to come out thermostat hole fine)
- when running see water come out tell-tale and see water come out 2 exhaust holes on rear side under cowl. (not alot but does come out)
- After it is warmed up can put hand on head - it's hot and can't hold hand on it too long ... doesn't seem to burn paint though.

So, back to question - is this black oil excessive for a '77 and how can I stop it ? How long should I be able to hold hand on head without feeling pain. Engine seems to run fine and don't think I have any water blockage but how can I really tell ? just need to ask .. perhaps I'm just paranoid."

"That "Black" substanc

"That "Black" substance you see is not actually oil. It is excess/unburnt fuel which is draining down through the inner portion of the exhaust housing (the hsg between the powerhead & the lower unit). This is a common thing with the 9.9hp and 15hp models.

The engine does run slightly hot due to the thermostat which opens at about 143°, causing the engine to actually run slightly hotter. Since you installed a new water pump assy, and if it concerns you, install a new thermostat also.

However to install that thermostat, you'll need to remove the cylinder head, so along with the thermostat purchase a head gasket & water jacket gasket."
