1977 9.9 evinrude

Just purchased a pretty nice 14’ StarCraft with a 9.9hp evinrude circa 1977. Seems to run really well. Changed the gear oil today. Let all the old stuff run out and out some new in the top and let it drain as well. That went well. BUT, it seems this little engine has a mind of its own when it decides to go into reverse or not. Sometimes it will go into reverse and then not into forward. Ran it in a tub of water and tried to figure out any patterns, but to no avail. Thought maybe there was some sort of linkage adjustment but couldnt seem to get that to do anything. Should the engine be able to start in reverse?? Seems we tried putting in reverse and the prop locked up - good i think, and then it started and was running in reverse. Mostly it just doesnt like to go into reverse but occasionally it does. Seems if you mess with the prop it will go int gear better (not running obviously), it seems like if you try to turn the prop it makes it easier for it to actually catch in reverse when you drop it into that gear. I know this is probably not making a lot of sense but we are trying to figure things out as we go. It just seems that if i turn the prop and my friend drops it into reverse that seems to help which makes me thing there is a weak gear or linkage somewhere. Any help would be appreciate. NW Ohio, flat land and NO lakes to speak off. Going to try the boat on the Maumee River and Sandusky Bay.

Motor should be running or when on a stand the prop must be turned when shifting.----Motor needs a new water pump impeller.

Thank you. Just curious as to how a new water pump impeller will make it shift into gear better? I have no idea how this works

Impellers have nothing to do with shifting.-----Your motor does not have overheat warning !----It does not have overheat shutdown!-----A wise owner would install a new impeller.------But perhaps the previous owner messed up shift connecter work when changing the impeller.----Remember I can not see , here or touch your motor.----All an easy fix here.

Your 1977 Evinrude 9.9hp’s shifting issues likely stem from linkage or internal gear problems. It should not start in reverse; the gear engagement is likely off. Since the prop’s resistance affects gear engagement, check the shift linkage for adjustment or lubrication. If the linkage and adjustment don’t solve the problem, the internal gears might be worn. Consulting a marine mechanic or repair manual for specific guidance could help resolve the issue.
