1977 85hp shifting issues

First time replacing water pump and removing lower unit. Reinstalled lower unit, would only shift forward, now will not shift either direction.

Are you sure you got the shift rod connected under the carburetors?---You are running the motor to shift?---You are turning the propeller to shift with motor stopped?

the rod is connected but on the remote when I shift to forward and then reverse it works both ways but back into forward it will not go into reverse.
took apart the remote and the 2 tooth cams inside are skipping. put it back together with them meshed it works again it's like it is going to far into reverse and skipping the teeth on the cam

the engine was stopped did not turn prop

Try shifting with the engine running.----It has an oil pump in the lower unit that provides PRESSURE to make shifting easier.-----Motor MUST be running .----Or your assistant MUST turn the prop !
