I have a 1977 85hp evinrude last time i took it out it ran great. i tried to take it out a few weeks ago after it sitting a few months due to winter i got it in the water go to start it and all i get was click, click then after that nothing at all. i had a fresh charge on the battery i know this cause everything els was workin. i checked the cylinoid and starter by arching with two screwdrivers both work fine. its just toataly dead when i turn the key not even the choke will engaige when i push the key in. any suggestions will be gladly appreciated im pretty lost as where to start looking. ignition or maybe throttle box?

Have your battery load tested. If that's okay, then check all your connections on both the mtr and the battery. Also make sure your battery cabels are okay. Corroesion can build up on the inside of them.

1st try another battery. That battery may not have the cranking amps to start the motor. If this doesn't help than clean posts, charge battery and check cables from battery to starter/Soilinoid.

ok so im all out of ideas i have tried almost everything i can think of. when i cross it with the two screwdrivers it turns over just fine but it wont fire either its just dead at the key. i have taken the throtle box apart and checked all the wires and cleaned them up and still nothing.

Is your neutral switch ok? Are you getting 12 volts at one of the small terminals on the solenoid when you have the key in the start position?

Look at the solenoid. Two big cables, two little wires. If you are crossing the big cables with your screwdrivers (One goes to the battery, the other to the starter) and it is turning over, that eliminates the battery, cables, and connections as your problem. (You have to be very careful doing that, the safer practice is to use one side of a pair of battery jumper cables). Now look at the two little wires. One goes to ground, the other eventually to the keyswitch, after passing through the neutral safety switch. Temporarily connect the switch wire terminal to the starter battery cable (be careful.) If it then turns over, you have a swith, neutral safety switch, wire, or wire connector issue. If not, make sure the other little wire is properly connected to its ground. If it is, you have a bad solenoid. It should be especially suspect if you hear it click when you hit the switch lead terminal with 12 volts, and the enginge still does not turn over.
