Please bare with me...new to boating!!
We took our boat out for the first time and friends said that we were not getting water pumping consistantly through the motor (intermitent). We took the boat to a mechanic and he said this motor has a thermal switch so we will only pump water for cooling when needed. is this so???
Thanks in advance
Tami

"Thermo Switch?
water pumps c

"Thermo Switch?
water pumps constantly ,from start up to shut down. There are thermostats /in your case i think one located on the top rigt portion of the powerhead just above the top plug (off to the right ).Are you hearing any alarms,is the engine too hot to touch?Have you changed impeller or done any thing in the way of maintaining this engine?also is there a constant stream of water coming from the engine while running?"

"The motor mechanic says the i

"The motor mechanic says the impeller is fine (he ran the motor to check it and NO there is not a constant stream coming out of the engine. The mechanic says that the thermostat will allow water to stream when needed (this was my concern). He did change some hoses but other than than that he said the motor is fine. We do get an alarm when putting the motor in reverse sometimes (he, the mechanic says thats just a short). Very confused!! The motor did NOT get hot while running last weekend. Any thoughts would be greatly appriciated"

"there may not be a constant s

"there may not be a constant stream(i cant remember its been a while since i had a 1978 70 hp)it looks like its peeing out the side, some models have it some dont ,i would advise you to test your overheat alarm/fix that short.
it should make a chirp sound when the key is turned on.there is a wire that looks like it goes into the engine(looking at it from the back)
disconnect it (think its orange)its the warning sensor .ground it out (it should make the buzzer go on).your short may be in the control box.
everything sounds like its in order other than a short, its not getting hot and apperantly your thermostats are working."

Hi mate your motor should have

Hi mate your motor should have a solid stream from the tell tail because cold water is circulating through the exhaust baffle plate and cover this is where your tell tail fitting is half way down the side of this plate. The thermostat controls the water temp at idle and does not effect the tale tail steam.

Are you sure that a 1977 model has a telltale. I'm not.}

"[i]"get a new mechanic&#3

""get a new mechanic"
They are not listed in the parts list for that model

"if it doesnt have one i would

"if it doesnt have one i would install one this is a link on how to http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=222677&highlight=pee+hole+tell+tale ..........its good to have a tell tail so you know you are pumping water.

if all you have is the holes under the hood on the exhaust leg that spits water it is unlikely to be a steady stream.

if you have never replaced the water pump and dont know if it ever has been changed--i would go ahead with that........its a very simple procedure...you just have to remove the lower unit."

"Hi all the holes under the lo

"Hi all the holes under the lower cowling usualy pour water out when the bypass valve is blown off its seat and the when the thermo opens hot water comes out above the cav plate from the holes in the side towards the rear, if you havent got a tale tail put one in its not hard."
