I have a this 77 70hp motor on

I have a this 77 70hp motor on a center console boat. The control box is a generic top mount single lever. My problem is that when I start the motor my idle speed in the water must be around 1500 - 2000 otherwise the motor will not stay running and then I must adjust the idle speed screw back on the motor after engine is warm so that I do not exceed wot rpm . I know that the original side mount control box has the warm up lever to assist the motor in warming up. What are my options to get this in working properly?

"Impossible to exceed the top

"Impossible to exceed the top rpm setting unless you've changed the timing, reset various engine linkages, etc.

Sounds like you've got a great amount of excess play in the throttle cable that you need to eliminate first."

Thanks for the response Joe! S

Thanks for the response Joe! So I do not need to have a warm up lever to increase the amount of fuel to keep the motor running at start until warm? This generic top mount does not have the ability to be in neutral and increase throttle without shifting into forward gear. i will recheck the throttle cable play.

"Yes, a warm up lever will be needed in order to increase the throttle somewhat to start a cold engine."

I will see if I can find an affordable top mount control box that has a warm up option/lever.

My Johnson manual show to set rpm 1000 to 1100 in neutral. I assume this is with a warm engine in water? If not, what is the recommended rpm?

Thanks again for your help."

"Most top mounted console throttle/shift controls incorporate a warm up feature. Usually functions by pulling the lever sideways to release from the shift mechanism.

That engine, depending on the shaft length, on a flushette, should idle at 1000rpm (20") or 1200rpm (25"). In the water, the idle will drop to normal.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:

I'm no expert but I got advice from the guys for my 85HP Johnson and it works great. I had the same issue with idle now I just pull the shifter/throttle control to the left (which dissengages the motor) and I can then rev up in neutral.
