1977 70 hp evinrude shuts off when put in gear

"recently baught boat and moto

"recently baught boat and motor .started it up home useing garden hose engine work fine,took it the lake over the weekend .and when put in gear foward or reverse ,the engine dies. after trying for 30 to 45min ,finally got it going ,but wont go more than 5mph .if try to give more gas engine will die.i rebuilt all3 carb ,replaced spark plugs ,check comp ,test @ 115 on all 3 cylinders .chech coils for spark ,test ok . did anyone ever had a problem like this or have an idea what the problem could be .ps i am new to this my first boat"

"u may have a ground wire prob,off ign switch.....i would also ,ck ignition advance........(not sure what that is)?...take it to a good boat shop,so they can fix it for u,...before,u burn it up.................a carb job,is much more than a rinsing......."
 
Looper three cylinder engines

Looper three cylinder engines are very sensative to carburetor balance. You have dirty carbs. Clean and rebuild all three before you melt down a cylinder.

Did you perform a synch. and link? If not, get a hold of a manual to walk you through it.

In the meantime, make sure you have a strong spark on all three cylinders. If you have an inductive timing light, this test is easy. Just look for a cylinder not firing or dropping out."

"yes i removed all 3 carb and clean the hi & low speed jets .replaced all needle and seat floats and all gaskets. how would you know if the timer base is sticking . because today i took the boat out on the lake .after driving for 5 min @ 5mph i increase the throttle ant got it up to 35mph ,so in slowed down and try to go again ang it just wont go more than 5mph again"

Note... THe 7/16" gap is important. The spark cannot be tested simply by using the spark plugs. You can build a tester quickly as follows.

A spark tester can be made with a piece of 1x4 or 1x6, drive a couple nails through it, then bend the pointed ends at a right angle. You can then adjust the gap by simply twisting the nail(s). Solder a spark plug wire to one which you can connect to the spark plug boots, and a ground wire of some kind to the other to connect to the powerhead somewhere.

Using the above, one could easily build a spark tester whereas they could connect 2, 4, 6, or 8 cylinders all at one time. The ground nail being straight up, the others being bent, aimed at the ground nail. A typical 4 cylinder tester follows:
