"Hello everyone. I have a 1966 glastron with a 77 model mercury 65 hp four cylinder that has been sitting for about 7 years I am starting to restore the boat now and need some information about the engine. i hooked a battery and tried to start the engine it cranked over and tried to start but never did. besides new plugs, wires, remove and clean the carbs and replace the impeller is there anything else that I should do to the engine. Also is there a good cheap place to get a new set of cables and are they difficult to change. thanks for any input"

Have you done a compression check to be sure all that work is worth it? If so you should also rebuild the fuel pump and change the oil in the lower unit.

I'm trying to figure out if the boat and motor are worth the time and money to restore and get running. I am going to do a compression test on the engine this weekend and go from there.

"If the boat just needs some cleaning up you can consider that you can pick up a running, used motor in that horsepower range that is 10 to 20 years younger for about 1000 bucks.

Often times a motor that has been sitting just needs a bit of TLC to bring it back, but you should always consider the restoration costs against replacement costs.

Some new wires, carb kits, waterpump and fuel pump kits can be considered general maintenance, but personally, I wouldn't go as far as a rebuild on a 1970-something motor.."
