1977 55HP Evinrude 55773D Oil System

Hey all,
Pardon the lack of knowledge on my part. This is my first venture in outboards.

I've been through all common checks I can find online for this motor. Dropped lower unit, water pump is new. Carbs clean, new plugs.

I am having issues with the oil system. My understanding is that this is a 2-stroke. Does it have an oil injection system or should I pre-mix?

If injection, does it burn the oil from the lower unit?

I want to make sure I've got all of this correct before I fire it up. Any help is appreciated.

That engine is pre-mix only. Use a quality TCW3 2-stroke oil mixed at a 50:1 ratio. I have had good performance out of my pre-mix engine using Evinrude premium 2-stroke oil gallon. It's the red colored oil and is also branded as Evinrude XD30. I can usually find this at Walmart for $20/gallon. There are other good oils out there, but at minimum it must have the TCW3 rating for your engine.

Automatic oil injection didn't come around until the mid 80's. On those engines there was a separate oil tank that was inside the boat. The lower unit is completely sealed and the oil is only used as gear lube.

The VRO auto oil injection setup came into being in 1984.

Your 1977 55hp Evinrude requires the high quality 50/1 oil.

50/1, keeping it simple, is 1 pint of 50/1 oil to 6 gallons of gasoline.

The mechanical shift gearcase requires what is called "HiVis 90w"... filled at bottom large slotted drain screw hole until the oil flows out the top large slotted oil level screw hole. (Also available at Wal*Mart).
