Turn it clockwise - and use a trick someone just passed along - if you put a bit of dishsoap on the impeller it will help it slide in easier (because intially it seems like the impeller is too big for the cover.

As you rotate the driveshaft clockwise just put some light pressure on the pump cover until it slides down into place. Make sure that your lower seal stays in place on the pump cover or you will be tearing it down again in a week or so to reseat it......

"another idea behind getting that seal to seat is to torque it down to spec, then backoff the impeller bolt a couple of turns. Then repeat the torque process. Sometimes the initial torque will tighten and then seat itself after a few seconds. This could loosen the torque value and allow the pressure to subside enough to allow leakage. I always use this rule of thumb when torqueing anything with a value."

"thanks for the water pump tricks.update on the way it was running,i changed the upper crank seal, spark plugs, rebuilt the fuel pump, still ran the same with the muffs on,so we put it in a barrel of water,WOW what a difference it idles good now responds with the cold start lever and doesn't race out of control, totally different motor.wonder if most of the problem was running it withe muffs on instead of the barrel, did that because pump wasn't pumping anyways now it idles a little low but i think a little adjustment to the linkage to open the throttle blades might be all i need.THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP YOU ALL SURE KNOW YOUR STUFF.i guess i don,t have to pull the plug on the boat in the middle of the lake after all."

"I'm glad to hear that your motor is running better now. Its funny that you thought of pulling the plug out in the middle of the lake!!! I would never do that. It costs less for the insurance company to get it close to shore, then you'll have more money to spend on a new one!
