"Hello all. I am trying to nurse a boat back from several long periods of non-use and thought I had all the right service done at a marina. Aside from some outdrive work, they replaced the fuel in the tank, flushed fuel system, replaced spark plugs, fuel filter, oil and water filter, water pump, gear lube and cleaned and rebuilt carb. They also replaced a bad fuel sender. They water tested it and said it ran great.

On my first outing (about two months later,) had some trouble starting it, but eventually got it working. There was a new noise I had never heard before: sounded like a loud pneumatic pressure discharge about 1/2 sec long. I used it for about an hour and put it away for a week. The next weekend it ran fine for about 4 hours, then would only run slightly above idle... any faster it would sputter and die. The hiss/pop came back when trying to start or soon after starting.

Is that hiss/pop I'm hearing a backfire? After reading the forum, it sounds like a lot of these issues are fuel or carb related, but I would have thought the service would have fixed it...

Thanks,
Tom"

"Tom:

The hiss/pop is backfiring; comes from a lean condition, plug wires cross firing, burned valve or out of time due to a worn chain. How old is the fuel pump? It may be on it's last leg since you awakened it.

Did they do a compression check on the engine?"

"Guy,

Thanks for your thoug

"Guy,

Thanks for your thoughts. A compression test was done in late 2006 and was good, but I don't think the fuel pump has been replaced in many years. Perhaps that is a good place to start. Thanks"

I thought about the above part of the problem. Maybe the old coil is failing from age.

Did the dealer replace the filter in the dome of the fuel pump? Look at your paperwork for a reference. See item #2 below.

"Next time it messes up, check for correct strong spark; faint white or orange is a weak spark. Spark should jump from plug wire 1/4" w/an audible snap. The spark should be CONSISTENT while cranking. I use a spare plug wire attached to the coil w/the other end boot pulled back to expose the electrode. Hold the wire w/the bare electrode near the engine block while someone else cranks. KEEP FIRE EXTINGUISHER IN ONE HAND.

Coil part number 898253T24

"Guy,

Thank you so much for all of your comments!! It may take me a few weeks to try all your suggestions. I'm determined to get this boat running great again, and am likely to do more of the work myself due to cost constraints and personal interest.

I've included a snapshot of the parts list from the last two servicings, as well as the text from the recent servicing. I think I'm still under warranty from the recent service, but no longer live in the same area so they probably wouldn't be able to do anything anyway.

"Take your time. Look for a used factory manual on eBay. Whenever you put fuel in the tank, add STABIL fuel preservative per instructions on bottle. Get the pint or quart size. It will keep the fuel fresh for a year. Pour it into the tank first then add fuel from a reliable brand."
